Low Public Transportation Give Rise to Motorcycles

blog @AUTOMOTIVE RELATED STOCKS
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The National Police Traffic Corps has noted that the number of operating vehicles in 2013 had reached 104.2 million units, 86.25 million of which are motorcycles. The number increased by 11 percent, compared to that of 2012, which were 75 million units.

Deputy Minister of Transportation Bambang Susantono, said that the increasing number of motorcycles was caused by inefficient public transportation planning. “At times when the government can yet provide good public transportation, motorbikes serve as an alternatives to mobility,” he said.

Bambang added that the constant growth of motorcycle is caused by cheap prices and easy credit scheme. The problem with this constant growth, he said, is on the awareness of safety riding. “Almost every five minutes, there is an accident. And almost every 20 minutes, there is death by accident,” he said.

Bambang said that the increase on motorcycle users happens not only in Indonesia but also in other countries such as India, Taiwan, and Vietnam. The problem was acknowledged globally in the International Transport Forum Annual Summit 2014 in Leipzig, Germany, last week. In the forum, Indonesia pledged to cooperate with vehicle producers to create safe transportation vehicles.

Rupiah traded among banks in Jakarta on Monday afternoon strengthened by 36 points to 11,579 per US dollar from the previous 11,615 per dollar.

“Even though the Jakarta Composite Index closed on a negative note today, the rupiah stayed in positive territory due to the appreciation of currencies across Asia,” Trust Securities research head Reza Priyambada said in Jakarta on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said that the strengthening of the Indian rupee and the Malaysian ringgit had influenced the rupiah on Monday. “In addition, it seems that market players expect Indonesia to continue recording good economic data,” he said.

On the first day of June, Indonesia is expected to book a surplus in the trade balance and the inflation rate is projected to remain relatively stable. Meanwhile, in the morning, the rupiah traded at 11,613 per dollar. (nfo)

Banks Set for Financial ‘Rat Race’

Jakarta. Indonesian banks are bracing for a more competitive landscape this year as tight funding sources and credit risks spark concerns among the country’s lenders, according to a recent survey.

The Indonesian Banking Survey 2014 conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) showed the nation’s economic slowdown, coupled with higher interest rates, has increased the competition for funding sources between lenders.

Indonesia’s economy grew by 5.2 percent in the first quarter — its slowest growth since 2009 — with the central bank holding its highest benchmark interest rate in four years to narrow the gap in Indonesia’s current account.

With lending growth surpassing 20 percent and fewer funds coming into the banking system, the loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) reached 90.47 percent in February, compared to 84.35 percent in the same month last year, according to data from the Financial Services Authority (OJK).

Bank Indonesia (BI) requires lenders to maintain their LDR below 92 percent, or they will have to increase their central bank reserve requirement by 0.2 percent.

The condition has triggered a rat race of higher deposit rates and goodie bags in efforts to expand their depositor base, said Jusuf Wibisana, a partner at PwC.

“That’s why foreign-owned banks are even offering 10 percent interest rates right now. The competition for funding sources is becoming tougher,” Jusuf said.

PwC’s survey, which polled analysts at the country’s top 30 banks by assets, showed that 33 percent of the 82 participating bankers were concerned about liquidity, which had spurred many lenders to increase their deposit interest rate.

Indonesia’s Deposit Insurance Agency (LPS) lifted its deposit rate by 25 basis points on Tuesday to 7.75 percent in commercial banks and 10.25 percent for rural banks, known as BPR.

On the other hand, competition in lending disbursement heated up, with 39 percent of the bankers surveyed believing that credit risk was the biggest concern this year. OJK data showed lending growth slowed to 22.2 percent in February this year, compared with 26.1 percent in the same period last year.

Jusuf said that most banks would shy away from increasing their lending rates, establishing a more prudent lending policy. This would mean greater pressure to lenders’ net interest margin.

“However, [Indonesian banks] will still be profitable despite this,” Jusuf said.

Average net interest margin for commercial banks narrowed to 4.18 percent in February, compared to 4.89 percent at the end of 2013.

Creation of the World

In the beginning there was only

chaos.

Then out of the void appeared Erebus, the unknowable place where death dwells, and Night. All else was empty, silent, endless, darkness. Then somehow Love was born bringing a start of order. From Love came Light and Day. Once there was Light and Day, Gaea, the earth appeared.

Then Erebus slept with Night, who gave birth to Ether, the heavenly light, and to Day the earthly light. Then Night alone produced Doom, Fate, Death, Sleep, Dreams, Nemesis, and others that come to man out of darkness.

Meanwhile Gaea alone gave birth to Uranus, the heavens. Uranus became Gaea’s mate covering her on all sides. Together they produced the three Cyclopes, the three Hecatoncheires, and twelve Titans.

However, Uranus was a bad father and husband. He hated the Hecatoncheires. He imprisoned them by pushing them into the hidden places of the earth, Gaea’s womb. This angered Gaea and she plotted against Uranus. She made a flint sickle and tried to get her children to attack Uranus. All were too afraid except, the youngest Titan, Cronus.

Gaea and Cronus set up an ambush of Uranus as he lay with Gaea at night. Cronus grabbed his father and castrated him, with the stone sickle, throwing the severed genitales into the ocean. The fate of Uranus is not clear. He either died, withdrew from the earth, or exiled himself to Italy. As he departed he promised that Cronus and the Titans would be punished. From his spilt blood came the Giants, the Ash Tree Nymphs, and the Erinnyes. From the sea foam where his genitales fell came Aphrodite.

Cronus became the next ruler. He imprisoned the Cyclopes and the Hecatoncheires in Tartarus. He married his sister Rhea, under his rule the Titans had many offspring. He ruled for many ages. However, Gaea and Uranus both had prophesied that he would be overthrown by a son. To avoid this Cronus swallowed each of his children as they were born. Rhea was angry at the treatment of the children and plotted against Cronus. When it came time to give birth to her sixth child, Rhea hid herself, then she left the child to be raised by nymphs. To conceal her act she wrapped a stone in swaddling cloths and passed it off as the baby to Cronus, who swallowed it.

This child was Zeus. He grew into a handsome youth on Crete. He consulted Metis on how to defeat Cronus. She prepared a drink for Cronus design to make him vomit up the other children. Rhea convinced Cronus to accept his son and Zeus was allowed to return to Mount Olympus as Cronus’s cupbearer. This gave Zeus the opportunity to slip Cronus the specially prepared drink. This worked as planned and the other five children were vomited up. Being gods they were unharmed. They were thankful to Zeus and made him their leader.

Cronus was yet to be defeated. He and the Titans, except Prometheus, Epimetheus, and Oceanus, fought to retain their power. Atlas became their leader in battle and it looked for some time as though they would win and put the young gods down. However, Zeus was cunning. He went down to Tartarus and freed the Cyclopes and the Hecatoncheires. Prometheus joined Zeus as well. He returned to battle with his new allies. The Cyclopes provided Zeus with lightning bolts for weapons. The Hecatoncheires he set in ambush armed with boulders. With the time right, Zeus retreated drawing the Titans into the Hecatoncheires’s ambush. The Hecatoncheires rained down hundreds of boulders with such a fury the Titans thought the mountains were falling on them. They broke and ran giving Zeus victory.

Zeus exiled the Titans who had fought against him into Tartarus. Except for Atlas, who was singled out for the special punishment of holding the world on his shoulders.

However, even after this victory Zeus was not safe. Gaea angry that her children had been imprisoned gave birth to a last offspring, Typhoeus. Typhoeus was so fearsome that most of the gods fled. However, Zeus faced the monster and flinging his lighting bolts was able to kill it. Typhoeus was buried under Mount Etna in Sicily.

Much later a final challenge to Zeus rule was made by the Giants. They went so far as to attempt to invade Mount Olympus, piling mountain upon mountain in an effort to reach the top. But, the gods had grown strong and with the help of Heracles the Giants were subdued or killed.

JCI shed a light @ presidential election

Jakarta. Indonesian financial markets gave a warm response to the appointment of Jusuf Kalla as the running mate of Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo, presidential candidate for the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, known as the PDI-P.

The rupiah gained ground against the dollar and the yields of government bonds fell while the stocks fell slightly.

Joko named Kalla, a former vice president, as his running mate on Monday. Former Army general Prabowo Subianto, the presidential candidate for the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra), picked Hatta Rajasa, the top economy minister until last week, as his running mate.

Economists and fund managers in Jakarta said Joko and Kalla are expected to set a solid economic foundation for the country and ease political uncertainty in Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

Benjamin Haratua Siahaan, who helps manage Rp 15.1 trillion ($1.3 billion) in assets at Panin Asset Management in Jakarta, said the market was driven by the recent announcements.

“I think the growth in today’s market is owed entirely to the presidential election. From what I’ve seen, the expectations of foreign investors from this election lean more towards the Jokowi-Kalla pair. Foreign investors are keen on Joko Widodo because his records show … [he] is unabashed in kick-starting infrastructure developments,” Benjamin said.

The rupiah rose to trade at 11,351 against the dollar on Monday. The currency has gained 7 percent so far this year, making it the best performer in the Asia-Pacific region, according to Bloomberg data.

With a stronger rupiah and a vibrant stock market, confidence in Southeast Asia’s largest economy is growing.

“As the various pieces of the political jigsaw puzzle settle into place, market players will find themselves breathing more easily,” Wellian Wiranto, an economist at OCBC Bank, said in a statement obtained by the Jakarta Globe on Monday. “While nothing is set in stone yet and there are still months to go before the July 9 presidential election, the immediate market reaction to Monday’s announcement will be one of relief and hope.”

The Jakarta Composite Index — Indonesia’s main stock gauge — which hit the 5,000 mark last Friday, fell slightly at Monday close. It has gained 17.3 percent so far this year. Analysts attributed the fall in to investors cashing in gains from the previous days of trading.

Businesses were upbeat on the news of the presidential candidates, according to Suryo Bambang Sulisto, chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (Kadin.

“If you see, all four of them are business people. So, to some extent, they understand our concerns and expectations,” he said.

However, Suryo refused to speculate on which candidate would draw the most support from the business community.

“We have yet to see their plans on the economy. Until then, I cannot say for sure,” he said.

Investment managers such as Benjamin and Jeffrosenberg Tan at Sinarmas Asset Management, said foreign investors highly favored the Jokowi-Kalla pairing, calling it market friendly.
